Wow, what a wild ride! This movie had me feeling everything, everywhere, all at once. Sometimes it was a little overwhelming, but Michelle Yeoh’s performance kept me focused and grounded. And can we talk about how awesome it was to see the kid from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom all grown up? He still sounds like the Goonies, but now he’s playing Yeoh’s love interest. And let’s not forget about James Wong, who defied the odds at 90+ years old to give a standout performance. Plus, Jamie Lee Curtis was a hoot and clearly having the time of her life.
The fact that the movie is about a multiverse had me hoping for a connection between Yeoh’s character in this film and her character in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Although, it is interesting that this is the third movie in a row that’s about a relationship between an Asian mother and daughter – first with Turning Red about a 13-year-old and her mom, then Umma about an 18-year-old and her mom, and now this one with Yeoh and her daughter who appears to be in her early 20s. Who knew this would become such a popular movie trend?
The music in this film was a real standout for me. The story is about a mid-life laundromat owner, but the music elevated the stakes and made it feel like Yeoh was the key to saving the entire multiverse. It was such a contrast to see these grand orchestral cues alongside Yeoh’s portrayal of a hardworking, blue-collar mom.
Overall, I’d say this movie was a fun, chaotic, and entertaining trip. It’s definitely all over the place, but the amazing cast and musical score make it a standout. I’m giving it a 8.5 out of 10!
It’s no wonder that this movie has 11 Oscar nominations this year. I think it deserves to take home at least 4 awards, it’s that good.
